POEPPIG, Eduard Friedrich (1798-1868) A series of 13 original preparatory and finished drawings to the artist's "Reise in Chile, Peru und auf dem Amazonstrome wahrend der Jahre 1827-32"
Imprint: [Variously dated 1827-1829 or undated]Binding: Hardback Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
13 original drawings, various mediums, various sizes., Full crushed dark red morocco titled in gilt on front board, spine richly gilt in 7 compartments, marbled endpapers, modern red cloth box, red morocco lettering piece.
A fine collection of drawings from the early days of the modern exploration of South America., Nine of the drawings are in a finished state: ready for translation by the engraver, with title and Poeppig's name beneath. Of these, eight are of landscapes which capture much of the awe-inspiring grandeur of the landscape through which he traveled searching for scientific fame and recognition. Poeppig arrived in South America in 1827, a 28-year old inspired no doubt by the accounts of the travels 20 years earlier of Baron von Humboldt and by a wish to become part of the next generation of German scientific explorers. "After visiting Chile and Peru Poeppig journeyed down the Amazon to Para. Part of his scientific collection was lost but he managed to save an enormous quantity" (Borba de Moraes). A botanist by training, another result of his travels was his Nova genera et species plantarum in regno Chilensi...(Leipzig: Hofmeister, 1835-1845), a work which established him in the scientific community to the extent that he became professor of Botany at the University of Leipzig. Simultaneously, he published his account of his pioneering travels Reise in Chili, Peru... (Leipzig: F. Fleischer, 1835-36), in two quarto volumes of text and a large folio containing plates taken, in part, from the present drawings. The drawings are as follows: 1. Un Montero. A countryman from the interior of Cuba. Pencil, 10 x 6 ½ inches, titled in ink and signed. 2. La Compana de Quillota vita del molino de Concon.
